As social media continues to become more of an integral part of our lives, it’s important to be mindful of what information we share online and with whom. One of the most common social media scams that we’ve noticed a rise in are impersonation scams.
Impersonation scams are when fraudsters create fake accounts to pretend to be an individual or business, and trick others into handing over personal information. They typically pretend to be an old friend, a celebrity, or even your financial institution.
Be cautious of unsolicited messages or comments asking for personal information or payment. Also check the profile for a low follower count and limited engagement on their posts. Your Credit Union will NEVER ask you for personal information or payment over social media. Never click on suspicious links and make sure to block those fake accounts.
