IRS Tax Scams

Posted by: LBS Financial on April 5, 2022

With Tax Day around the corner, scam artists are looking to take advantage of tax payers and claim their tax refund for themselves. These scams have evolved over the years, and it’s important that you know how to recognize and avoid them. Below is a common and new type of scam to avoid:

Scam Calls

You may receive phone calls from a person pretending to be an IRS agent asking for personal information or an immediate, unexpected payment that you owe. They may even threaten to suspend or cancel your SSN. If you receive any calls that fall under those categories, be sure to hang up and block that number.

Scam Emails for Students & Teachers

Recently there have been IRS impersonation emails that are targeting students and teachers who have “.edu” in their email address. These kinds of emails will include an IRS logo, include subject lines such as “Tax Refund Payment”, and will ask you to click on a link to submit a form with sensitive information. Make sure not to click on any suspicious links and report the email to the IRS by forwarding it to phishing@irs.gov.

LBS Financial Credit Union or the IRS will never email, text, or message you on social media asking for your personal or financial information. If you ever receive a suspicious call or message from the Credit Union, please contact us right away at 800.527.3328.
